In the "Tightrope Zone" cartoon from Dolcett the characters of Lucy and her mom only appear in 2-3 of the 40 drawings.
I've always been interested in these two characters. How did they get there? The situation makes me feel sad and worried about them.
(Don't get me wrong -- I don't want them to be rescued or released. I don't like rescue stories. It's just that their situation stirs strong emotions in me. Any execution story can stir strong melancholy feelings. When it's a mother-daughter situation like this the emotions are stronger.)
Dolcett's work is always very dark. I feel it has just a touch of humor also. That helps keep the story from being *too* dark and bleak. Partly that comes from his rather light-hearted, cartoonish drawing style.
(There's also some kind of strange semi-consent in The Tightrope Zone. The women who are going to hang seem worried and nervous. But none of them other than Penny asks to be released or spared or pardoned. I tried to capture this reluctant semi-consent in my story, "Gallows Day at the Old West Festival.")

In the original Dolcett drawing it looks like Mom is speaking and Lucy is reacting to her. But Dolcett didn't provide dialog for them. I wonder what Mom is saying.

It's cute how she keeps her knees spread apart.

My story "Noose Party" also features some black handcuffs. It was inspired by the
work of SusanCoquin. Warning - it's a sad and dark little story that does not have a happy ending.

Age differences in romance are a quirky topic.
In fiction an age difference seems to work fine. These two played a newly married couple. He was 50 and she was 21 during filming. The movie was successful. No one seemed bothered by the difference.
In real life a big age difference doesn't work well for most people (excepting a few big-time movie stars and billionaires).
Would we say it's a "taboo" to be in a relationship with a big age difference? I guess some would. Others wouldn't. Some would say it's a "taboo" in a good way and have fun breaking the taboo.
Some of my art and stories deal with taboos. Maybe I should try a story that features a big age difference in a romance and see how I like the topic. Reader reaction might be interesting too.

*I like this movie. The ending is slightly weak but the rest of it is very well done. It's supposed to take place in real time over about 90 minutes. The camera frequently shows a clock to emphasize the passage of time. I guess the director played a few tricks on the audience to build the tension. The clocks we see in the movie are not really tracking the time accurately. President Eisenhower cited it as his favorite movie. So did President Reagan. Not everyone liked it. I understand John Wayne felt it was un-American or anti-American. I'm told he later made the movie "Rio Bravo" with director Howard Hawks in response.
